We know that the Fourth of July is a fun time to celebrate with friends and family! However, with fireworks, barbecues, and more - there are some things to keep in mind for the pups!
Fireworks + Loud Noises
Some dogs do get scared by loud noises and may not be too happy with the loud, booming fireworks on the 4th of July. Especially if you can't be home with your pups, here are some steps that you can take to make the night easier for them.
- Have a dark, closed off space for your pup to go. Place your dog's bed or some blankets in a dark and closed off space, such as a walk-in closet or bathroom. This will give your dog a dark and comfortable space to get away from the noises and relax.
- Give your dog calming chews. If your dog's anxiety gets triggered by loud noises, it may be helpful to give them calming chews prior to the fireworks beginning to calm them down.
Barbecues + Human Food
The 4th of July means cookouts! Although these are usually filled with delicious foods for us, remember that our pups can't have everything that we can. Below are some foods that are safe and some foods to avoid.
- Safe: Strawberries, Blueberries, Carrots, Hot Dogs (cut into small pieces)
- Not Safe: Grapes, Avocados, Bacon, Fried Food
Keep in mind that while most meats are safe for dogs, feeding your dog fatty or salty meats could cause gastrointestinal issues.
Pool & Heat Safety
Lounging by the pool on this holiday weekend? Great! However, make sure that your pup is staying safe by the water and not overheating. Here are some tips.
- Dog Life Jacket - A dog life jacket is a great way to assist dogs if they accidentally fall into the pool (or pups who are not confident swimmers). Especially if your dog is not regularly around pools, they may not know to avoid the edges.
- Shade & Water - On hot days, it is important to make sure your pup has lots of shade to go and lay under. Whether under an umbrella or a spot inside, your pup will need a space to keep cool. Also, be sure to leave out a bowl of cool water for them to drink. If you notice your dog panting, you may need to give them a break from the sun.
